They play independently, but if they are left on their own the group tends to devolve into simply using their laptops to play video games or even watch youtube, and the game either stops or never gets started. My son, the DM, would like to get everyone off of screens but needs to keep the digital battle maps and tokens on Roll20, as he doesn't feel that he can sketch maps out successfully.
So here's where I would love some help: I've seen various flavors of the setup where there is a flatscreen TV laid down on a table, the map projected onto it and maybe minis used on top. That's what I need, but I have a few restrictions:

  1. Should be light and portable enough to put down on a dining room table and pick up to store in a closet afterwards.
  2. Should be durable enough to withstand the occasional bump from the herd of 12 year olds.
I'm not a handy person, so my question is this: What, exactly do I do? Tell me what to buy or what to do, and assume that I have the general level of handyman competence of your average toddler. I really want to help my son but the only thing I feel qualified to do is buy a cheap flatscreen and plop it down on the table!
